Journalist warns West Ham they are approaching panic buy season, cites Tottenham example

West Ham are edging closer to “panic buy season”, according to the Daily Mirror writer Tom Blow.

Writing for the newspaper’s online version on Wednesday (2 August), Blow warned the Hammers they need to quickly start spending the money generated from the £105million sale of captain Declan Rice.

He used Tottenham’s sale of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid in 2013 and the players they signed to replace the Welsh wizard as a warning to David Moyes’ side.

“Imagine selling your best player for £105million and spending not a penny of that cash. That’s what’s happening at West Ham following Declan Rice’s move to Arsenal,” Blow wrote.

“The Hammers are thought to be after the likes of Manchester United pair Scott McTominay and Harry Maguire – and there is still enough time for David Moyes to bring in reinforcements – but they are getting dangerously close towards panic buy season.

“Remember when Tottenham sold Gareth Bale to Real Madrid for £88m and spent the money on Roberto Soldado, Paulinho, Etienne Capoue, Nacer Chadli, Vlad Chiriches, Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela? Yeah, just don’t do that, Moyes.”

Start singing from the same hymn sheet

Is panic buy season approaching? Or has panic buy season already arrived?

There has been a huge disconnect at West Ham over the summer between manager David Moyes, who wants to sign proven Premier League talent, and new technical director Tim Steidten, who has been on the lookout for the best European talent on the market.

Quite frankly it has been an absolute mess. Conor Gallagher, James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez, Denis Zakaria, Harry Maguire, Scott McTominay, Adrien Truffert…that barely scratches the surface of players linked with a move to the London Stadium who have not yet been signed.

And it now looks like the deal to sign Carlos Borges from Manchester City has been hijacked by Ajax, with Fabrizio Romano reporting as such on Tuesday (1 August).

It is a mess and one that needs sorting quickly. West Ham need everyone singing from the same hymn sheet. Otherwise the Hammers could find themselves in a spot of bother.
