Journalist stunned by Lucas Paqueta as West Ham United man stars for Brazil in World Cup

Brazilian journalist Thomas Alencar was stunned by a “spectacular” pass from Lucas Paqueta as the West Ham man starred in Brazil’s 2-0 World Cup win over Serbia.

Paqueta operated in a deeper-lying midfield role alongside Casemiro and was praised by Brazilian news outlet UOL (25 November) for his performance, particularly in the second half where was pushed further forwards.

Alencar, who has 20,000 followers on Twitter and covers the Brazilian national side, was in awe of a pass from the West Ham midfielder in the first half of the match.

He said (via Twitter, 24 November): “What a spectacular pass from Lucas Paquetá to Raphinha. Alone and finished too weak.”

Express himself

Paqueta is a flare player, who thrives when he is given the freedom to express himself, which is a common theme which has run through Brazilian national sides for years. His career at the London Stadium hasn’t really kickstarted as of yet, with Moyes’ somewhat negative tactics holding him back.

The West Ham boss must soon realise his summer signings are better when they’re used in a more attacking system which will look to dominate games. His counter-attacking, defensive-minded football is just not suited to having the likes of Paqueta in the team.

What is clear is that West Ham do have a top-class player in their ranks. When looking at the Brazil bench, the 25-year-old is keeping some of the World’s best out of the side. Let’s hope the tournament in Qatar is a chance for Paqueta to find some form and kickstart his season at the London Stadium.

Moyes certainly needs the midfielder to step up when the Premier League returns at the end of December.
