Journalist shares ‘sad’ Jesse Lingard verdict amid West Ham United transfer update

It is “sad” that Jesse Lingard did not stay at West Ham following his successful loan spell, according to The Daily Telegraph’s Luke Edwards.

The attacker registered totals of nine goals and five assists during his time in claret and blue in the second half of the 2020/21 season.

As per Sky Sports (30 August), talks between the Hammers and Lingard’s representatives are slowly progressing regarding a short-term return to the club.

“I’m a bit sad about Jesse Lingard,” Edwards said on Transfer Gossip Daily. “He had a really good loan spell at West Ham. He did really, really well, and he should have gone to West Ham at the end of that loan spell.

“He had reignited his career, he was with a manager who loved and respected him, got the best out of him. He had a huge, huge impact on West Ham’s season.”

Second chance?

Many West Ham fans will still be angry with Lingard over his decision to move on from West Ham following his loan spell there, with the attacker then returning to Manchester United before moving to Nottingham Forest.

But his most successful time of late came in East London, much to the delight of the Hammers faithful, who fell in love with the attacker’s displays in claret and blue.

Lingard may just win back their faith should he land a short-term deal and reach the heights that he did before. But it remains to be seen whether or not the Hammers hand the former England international another chance.

At 30, he is perhaps not the player he was, even if it was just a few seasons ago when he was scoring goals for fun under Moyes.

The London Stadium club could certainly do with more bodies in the final third given how they will soon compete in Europe as well as domestically.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers have held talks for a new striker, with a loan or permanent deal possible.
