Journalist shares how Danny Ings can rediscover ‘killer instinct’ after West Ham United draw v Sheffield United

West Ham striker Danny Ings needs a run in the team to rediscover his “killer instinct,” according to journalist Alex Keble.

The verdict comes after the Hammers man missed a handful of big chances in the clash with Sheffield United on Sunday (21 January).

Ings did, however, win a penalty for the visitors in the Premier League encounter at Bramall Lane, which ended in a 2-2 draw.

“Danny Ings played well,” Keble wrote for the official Premier League website (22 January). “His link play was neat and tidy, his runs in behind deputised for the injured Antonio relatively successfully and he won the penalty from which West Ham took a second-half lead.

“But unfortunately what sticks out in the memory are the two chances he missed when West Ham were leading, as both his shots from a good position were blocked.

“In fairness to Ings, who once scored 22 Premier League goals in a single season for Southampton, a lack of match fitness might explain those misses. Perhaps a run in the team is all he needs for that killer instinct to return.”

More minutes on the way?

Ings really hasn’t been looked favourably upon by Hammers manager David Moyes this season, with the striker making just under 600 minutes in all competitions.

It is instead Michail Antonio who has led the line more often than not, with winger Jarrod Bowen coming into the picture when Antonio has been absent.

And even with the club competing in various competitions, Moyes has opted to ignore Ings and leave him out in the cold.

That all changed against Sheffield United, with Ings handed a rare start, with the striker producing a really impressive display.

West Ham

The experienced forward picked up many clever positions on the pitch at Bramall Lane, and played a key role in the West Ham penalty, which James Ward-Prowse converted.

But his position at the London Stadium club remains up in the air, with Ings destined to leave in the near future, particularly if a new striker is signed this month.
