Journalist provides Mohamed Bayo transfer update amid reported West Ham pursuit

Despite recent speculation that West Ham are in the race to sign Clermont centre-forward Mohamed Bayo, there is no “strong interest” from a Premier League club.

That’s according to CBS Sports Golazo writer Jonathan Johnson, as he told Sussex Live.

The Sun [09/10/21] reported earlier this month that Brighton had made an approach for the 23-year-old, after joining West Ham in pursuit of the Guinea international.

However, Johnson said: “There has certainly not been any strong Premier League interest until now.”

Johnson also shared when Bayo, who has scored five goals in nine Ligue 1 matches so far this season after netting 22 in the second-tier during the 2020/21 campaign, is likely to leave Clermont.

“His contract extension should mean that there is no January move, but I reckon it will ensure a good price come next summer,” he said.

“He will surely cost upwards of €10m [£8.4million], especially if he continues to score.”

Jumped the gun?

Johnson suggests any notion that there are clubs preparing for a bidding war over Bayo is premature.

It seems that there is nothing imminent from any Premier League clubs, and thus any interested parties can afford to bide their time a bit longer and make further assessments.

Bayo has made a scintillating start to the Ligue 1 campaign, with seven direct goal contributions in just nine games.

He has been Clermont’s leading light so far, helping the newly-promoted club to a respectable 14th place after 10 games.

West Ham need to sign another striker in the near future as they are currently heavily reliant on Michail Antonio.

If Bayo keeps up his form, perhaps interested onlookers will have to firm up their interest.

In other West Ham news, the Irons have made contact over this 16-cap centre-forward amid his contract impasse.
