Journalist: Alphonse Areola should be easy for West Ham to sign as PSG need money
West Ham United are in talks with Paris Saint-Germain to sign goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, according to the Daily Mail.
The Hammers want the France international on loan with a view to a permanent move, and Goal journalist Robin Bairner – a French football expert – has detailed why a move should be relatively easy.
He took to his personal Twitter account to post: “West Ham reported by the Daily Mail to be interested in PSG goalkeeper Alphonse Areola.
“Should be relatively easy to sign for two reasons. PSG are trying to raise money potentially for further signings, and they have far too many goalkeepers.”
Spot on
PSG are expected to announce the signing of free agent Gianluigi Donnarumma in the coming days, and he will join the likes of Keylor Navas, Sergio Rico, Marcin Bulka, Alexandre Letellier and Areola as options for the first-team.
Meanwhile, Garissone Innocent and Denis Franchi also remain on the books of the French giants, and it is clear to see why they would be keen to move Areola on.
They’re bankrolled by wealthy Qatari owners, but the effects of FFP are likely to prevent them from spending all their money from external sources, and thus they must raise their own capital by selling players.
As such, while they are still considered a club with a huge fortune behind them, in football terms they are still clawing aroud for money.
We currently have Lukasz Fabianski, Darren Randolph and David Martin as our goalkeeping options at West Ham, and the World Cup winner could prove to be an upgrade on the trio should a deal work out.
The 28-year-old impressed while on loan at Fulham last term despite their relegation, picking up their Player of the Year award [Fulham club website], and David Moyes’ side are offering him the chance of remaining in London.
The Frenchman was part of the World Cup-winning squad in Russia in 2018 but has fallen out of favour in recent months, missing out on the European Championship squad.
Areola would be hoping to make next summer’s World Cup squad, and a move to West Ham could boost his chances.
We are offering European football, and that potentially comes as an added advantage for him to get his international career back on track.
