Jose Mourinho speaks out as West Ham United manager search continues

Jose Mourinho has backed Ruben Amorim to succeed in any league after links with the West Ham job, although he insisted the Sporting CP manager is already at a big club.

The legendary boss explained that the decision will be made by Amorim and it will be up to any interested clubs to convince him that he should join them.

He also expressed his admiration for the manager both as a coach and as a person in a glowing assessment of his countryman’s credentials,

Speaking to Maisfutebol [1 May], Mourinho was asked about Amorim’s links to West Ham among other English clubs as he shared: “It’s also a question I shouldn’t answer, what can I tell you?

“I like him as a person, I like him as a coach. I think he has the conditions to train in any league and he has the conditions to train at any club.

“But he’s in a good league and he’s at a big club. The decision is his and it will be up to the clubs that want him, or don’t want him, to convince him with more or less arguments.

“What is clear from my side is that I like the person and I like the coach.”

Jose Mourinho reacts as Ruben Amorim linked to West Ham

As well as West Ham, Amorim has been linked with the vacancy at Liverpool as well as a possible opportunity at Chelsea if Mauricio Pochettino were to leave, with a move to England very much on the table this summer.

The Sporting CP boss met with David Sullivan at his home to discuss the possible appointment, but it is said the meeting did not go well, with disagreements over the club’s project and the owner’s perspective of Amorim’s experience.

Mourinho himself had briefly been linked to the position at the London Stadium, with Frank McAvennie telling West Ham Zone that the frustrations surrounding Moyes’ style of play would be eased by his appointment.

With the managerial search rumbling on in East London, Moyes’ future is yet to be decided, with the final call set to be made at the end of the season, although the constant links suggest he will not be in his position beyond the end of his current deal.
