Jose Mourinho, Graham Potter updates emerge at West Ham as David Moyes sack decision mooted
Jose Mourinho and Graham Potter will not be in the frame to take over if David Moyes is removed at West Ham, according to Sean Whetstone.
The 6 Foot 2 editor reported via Twitter on 12 February that neither of the former Chelsea manager’s are coaches under consideration by the Hammers, who have “no intention” of looking at them.
The Portuguese, 61, has been out of work since Roma fired him a month ago, while Potter has not taken another job in management since his seven month spell in charge at Stamford Bridge came to an end in April.
Moyes is under major pressure at the London Stadium after the 6-0 thrashing at home to Arsenal on Sunday (11 February), having failed to win any of the seven games played so far in 2024.
Whetstone wrote: “West Ham have no intention of considering Graham Potter or Jose Mourinho as a future West Ham manager should the manager’s position become available.”
West Ham not interested in pair of available Moyes replacements
It hardly seems sustainable for the Irons hierarchy to change their mind repeatedly on the manager’s future based on the last few results at any given time.
They have essentially been doing so for a year now considering Moyes was under threat last season as the club stumbled through a highly disappointing Premier League campaign, finally choosing to keep him after the Europa Conference League was won at the end of it.
But David Sullivan and company are going to need to actually make a decision at some point, and the situation appears to be coming to a head again.
If Moyes does go, and it is hard to escape the feeling that has been the direction of travel for some time but his sudden bursts of success have complicated the situation, then the board have to get a replacement right.
It isn’t in dispute that he has lifted the standard at West Ham significantly since he returned to the London Stadium, so maintaining that has to be the bare minimum.
Mourinho has won trophies wherever he has been for the past two decades, except Tottenham, but has the same defensive reputation that continues to be part of the problem with Moyes, while Potter seems like a solid, progressive option but would be under major pressure to get something going quickly after his bruising experience at Chelsea.
If Tim Steidten is in such a position of power as reports suggest then it would probably make sense to bring someone in who has similar ideas, but it seems neither Mourinho or Potter are in the picture.
