Jose Mourinho destined to stay at Roma after West Ham United approach made and rejected

Jose Mourinho turned down an approach for the West Ham United managerial position and is now destined to stay at Roma until his contract ends in June 2024, according to Siamo La Roma.

LaRoma24 (7 March) reported that the Hammers had made a “notable offer” for the Roma head coach to replace David Moyes in the London Stadium dugout, but the club knocked back any such speculation. [Claret & Hugh]

Moyes’ position at West Ham is still under scrutiny despite picking up a 1-0 win over Southampton at the weekend, with the club sitting just one point above the Premier League relegation zone.

West Ham

The Siamo La Roma report shared that West Ham contacted Mourinho about the possibility of taking the job in London, but “no thanks was the answer” from the Special One.

The former Chelsea boss is set to “honour his agreement” at the Italian giants and stay until his contract comes to a close on 30 June 2024.

Shame

Although Mourinho has polarised opinions during his trophy-laden managerial career, there was certainly some intrigue about him taking the reins at the London Stadium.

The Special One has left trophies and destruction wherever he has managed in his career, but it would be interesting to see him take to the Premier League just one more time.

It was always going to be a far-fetched option to lure Mourinho to West Ham United in the middle of a season, especially considering the precarious position in the Premier League right now.

The board are very unlikely to sack Moyes at this late stage of the season, regardless of how bad the results get, due to the lack of available managers who would be willing to take the job.

The option of Mourinho, unfortunately, looks to have been and gone.

Now all eyes are set on Moyes and the relegation battle that lies ahead.
