John Terry exposes widely-held West Ham fans theory on Twitter

John Terry has rubbished a popular theory held about him and West Ham supporters when he scored against the Irons in 2014.

The ex-Chelsea defender, now retired, struck the opener in a 2-0 win for the Blues at Stamford Bridge on Boxing Day 2014, and the away fans let him know their feelings on it.

An image of Terry celebrating in front of them shows West Ham fans up in arms, with some making some crude gestures while the Chelsea captain looks on.

The image has regularly done the rounds on social media with users attaching supposed quotes from Terry.

Businessman and Chelsea fan Frank Khalid referenced it on his verified Twitter profile on Monday [15/11/21], writing: “Loved John Terry’s story about the time he scored against West Ham and his family who are West Ham fans were giving him abuse. Wonder what family gatherings were like for John?”

However, Terry exposed the myth on his personal Twitter profile. He said: “My family support West Ham but these guys are not my family!”

Myth

This is a theory that football fans, especially those of a Chelsea persuasion, have basked in for a number of years now.

The alleged quotes are regularly used by social media accounts, usually trying to raise engagement online.

It tends to work as it encapsulates a lot of what football is ‘supposed’ to be about – rivalry and rubbing it in the nose of others, particularly family members who are not of the same allegiance.

But Terry has swiftly put an end to its validity, and it seems that that none of the supporters in the image are related to Terry in any way.

Perhaps that is one less thing for Chelsea fans to gloat about online now.

Terry is sure to get a hostile reception whenever he does line up against West Ham again, though, with the 40-year-old looking to take his first step into management after a three-year spell as a coach at Aston Villa.
