Joe Cole predicts result of West Ham United Carabao Cup clash v Liverpool

Joe Cole has suggested that West Ham United will be unable to make it three wins on the bounce when they face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Wednesday 20 December.

David Moyes’ side head into the meeting with Jurgen Klopp’s side off the back of an impressive 3-0 win over Wolves in the Premier League, but Cole believes that Liverpool may have “too much” for the Hammers, predicting the Irons will lose 2-1.

Liverpool have only lost once domestically so far this season but are without a win in their last two outings in all competitions and Cole believes that will ensure Wednesday night’s clash is close, but still gives Klopp’s side the edge.

Writing in his EFL predictions, he said: “This is one where my heart might rule my head here.

“If I’m going to predict it with my head, I want West Ham to win but I have to back Liverpool because I think they’re going to come into their own, from now to the run-in and I think they have too much for West Ham, but it’ll be tight.”

Tough ask

West Ham are in touching distance of yet another semi-final and while the team standing in their way are incredibly strong themselves, the Hammers must fancy their chances of causing yet another upset in a cup competition.

Moyes’ side have been one of the best cup teams in England in recent years and while most of that success has come on the European stage rather than the domestic one, they have a knack for picking up results in knockout football.

Liverpool are an incredibly tough opponent to have to face at this stage. Still, Klopp’s side have found themselves in the title race this season and the German could well make some changes as he attempts to navigate an incredibly difficult run of fixtures.

The Hammers have plenty of attacking talent at their disposal and if the forward options click like they did against Wolves last time out, it will cause every defence in the Premier League plenty of problems. Hopefully, they can better Cole’s prediction and book their place in the semi-final.
