Jesse Lingard set to miss out on England squad despite stunning West Ham loan
Jesse Lingard is set to miss out on the England squad despite an impressive loan spell at West Ham, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein.
Writing on his personal Twitter account on Tuesday, Ornstein reported that Gareth Southgate has omitted the Manchester United attacker from his final 26-man squad for the European Championships.
Lingard had made Southgate’s 33-man provisional squad but it remains to be seen why the England boss has overlooked one of the most in-form players in the Premier League ahead of the belated Euro 2020.
Shattering blow for Jesse
What?
We’re absolutely baffled as to how Lingard has missed out on the squad after playing so well while on loan for West Ham and impressing in the last international break for England.
Lingard scored nine goals and supplied five assists in 16 appearances for David Moyes’ side after he joined the Hammers from Man United on loan in January.
He also played a blinder in England’s 5-0 win against San Marino in March, winning the man of the match award despite not scoring.
You’d find it tough to find an attacking midfielder with a better record than Lingard in that time period – let alone an English one.
It’s a shattering blow for Jesse, who definitely deserves to be in the England squad with matches against Scotland, Croatia and the Czech Republic on the horizon.
Southgate will regret this massively.
In other West Ham news, the Irons have made an approach to sign this Englishman who’s keen on a move to the Premier League this summer.
