Jarrod Bowen: Top four is the objective for ‘under the radar’ West Ham
Jarrod Bowen has outlined the claret and blue vision in East London and declared that the Champions League is the goal for this West Ham side.
A comfortable 3-0 victory over Sheffield United at the London Stadium handed the Hammers a boost in the race for the European spots after a mini blip of just one win in their last four games.
The win lifted them above current Premier League holders Liverpool into fifth place and level on points with Chelsea who occupy the fourth and final Champions League spot.
Speaking to Jim White on talkSPORT [10am, 19/02/21] Bowen outlined his aims for the season, saying: “We know the quality, we know what the manager wants, we’ve all bought into his philosophy of wanting European football.
“If we can keep winning games and keep going under the radar a bit, because I feel like we are [going under the radar] which is probably good for us because people don’t expect us to be in and around it.
“We knew how important it was to win the other day and when we came in to the changing rooms we were looking straight on the table and we were fourth in the league which is where we want to be.
“The aim now is to keep winning games, keep hopefully coming in from games looking at the table and being in the top four and see where we end up at the end of the season.”
Time to make sure our bubbles don’t burst
Who would have thought we would be discussing our Champions League credentials at this stage of the season?
It has been an almighty campaign so far and there is still the potential for it to get even better.
Sunday’s game against Tottenham Hostpur is massive if the Irons are serious about the top four as a win against Jose Mourinho’s side would open up a nine-point gap between the sides and would likely rule the North London team out of contention.
This is exactly what David Moyes and his charges must do – eliminate their rivals when presented with the opportunity.
That is something we have failed to do so far this season and is probably the only criticism that can be levelled at West Ham.
When Liverpool arrived at the London Stadium on the back of just one win in their last eight games that should have been the chance to put one nail in their coffin.
Instead we relented and lost 3-1 which allowed them to get back into the hunt.
We must learn from our lessons and kill any Spurs hopes off on Sunday.
