Jamie O’Hara in disbelief at what he’s told about West Ham United manager latest

Jamie O’Hara couldn’t believe what he heard about West Ham United and Julen Lopetegui live on talkSPORT.

Despite reports emerging that the Hammers have sacked Lopetegui, no official announcement has confirmed his dismissal, and as things stand his future in East London is under consideration [Simon Stone].

However, newspaper editor Alan McKinlay appeared live on talkSPORT [6 January, 11:54pm] to discuss the latest back pages and what he said about the ongoing situation at the London Stadium left O’Hara in disbelief.

McKinlay said: “The club are denying that Lopetegui is on the brink of being sacked and they say there are no plans to do it.

“But he was given a month to save his job and they went four games unbeaten, and the job was safe, but now we’re back in the same position.

“So, it’s like they’re courting Graham Potter – if they don’t want Lopetegui, why don’t they just get rid of him?”

O’Hara replied: “Wow, we’ll see. It’ll probably cost them a few quid, that’s for sure.”

West Ham United toying with Julen Lopetegui and Graham Potter

Should The Times report on Monday (6 January) be believed that West Ham have offered Potter the head coach role while Lopetegui is still in charge, that is a very poor look for the board.

Yes, Lopetegui has been an underwhelming appointment, and yes, he should have been dismissed from his role some time ago, but this behind-the-scenes sneakiness is unbecoming.

David Sullivan is scared to admit his blunder has backfired massively and potentially put the Irons back years after the hard work done by David Moyes.

Therefore, he is covering all bases, and should Potter opt against a Premier League return to the London Stadium, then at least Lopetegui will still be at the helm.

Furthermore, this ongoing debacle is furthering the angst among the supporters, who are eager to understand what is going on at their club.

Potter has been out of work since his Chelsea dismissal in April 2023, and while his potential appointment sparks excitement, there is no telling whether he will be able to replicate his Brighton success in East London.

Regardless, Lopetegui has been hanging on by a thread for months since his arrival, and his sacking seemed inevitable sooner or later – it is just a shame West Ham are not handling the situation as one would hope.
