Jamie O’Hara and Carlton Cole clash over Jesse Lingard joining West Ham
Jamie O’Hara and Carlton Cole were embroiled in a spat on talkSPORT on Tuesday about whether Jesse Lingard should move to West Ham or remain at Manchester United.
The England international is wanted back at the London Stadium after his impressive loan spell during the second half of last season.
However, the Hammers are not able to meet the demands of Man Utd, and the 28-year-old appears willing to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place [The Athletic].
Cole and O’Hara have clashed while trying to make a case for what best suits Lingard.
Cole said as shown on talkSPORT’s official Twitter account on Tuesday morning: “I feel sometimes, you’ve just got to find new challenges. I think he’s done it now, and he deserves to be playing first-team football week in, week out. And he should just go and fill his boots and enjoy football again
“I can understand why he would want to stick around (at Manchester United) and try and fight his way into it. You do want a fighting spirit in the squad as well if you are Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, but I would say, for him, West Ham would love to have him back, and he would be the main man there.”
O’Hara replied: “If I was Jesse Lingard, he’s gone to West Ham, he’s done great things, shown to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer he’s still a top player and can play at the top level.
“He obviously believes in himself, which you can’t know by the way, that he’s still good enough to play for Manchester United, and if I was Jesse Lingard, at his age and where he is now, I would rather play 15 starts for Manchester United in the Premier League that season than play 38 for West Ham.”
Cole responded: “You say that, big argument World Cup is coming up now, he needs to play games, the same way he needed to play games to get into the Euros squad, and he just missed out, he needs to play games.
“You cannot afford to just be playing 15 games this season. He needs to play games and be the main man, and so, what he can do? Because there are players ahead of him at the moment, obviously, so he needs to go and show what he can do week in, week out.”
O’Hara then responded: “I just think there are too many players that take the easy options of going to play football (elsewhere)…”
Cole fired back: “You have got a World Cup coming!”
O’Hara added: “They have got the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup and the Premier League. They are in all competitions.”
Cole ended the debate by asking: “Would Gareth Southgate take him if he’s only played 15 games this season? I think you’re nuts!”
⚒ 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘁𝗼𝗻: “Find new challenges! #WHUFC would love Jesse back.”

Cole knows what he is saying, and it is in Lingard’s best interest to listen.
He revived his international career at West Ham, and the best thing would be to spend next season with us again.
It is his best chance of going to the World Cup next summer.
Lingard felt at home at the London Stadium and hit the ground running, and we believe he should be pushing to return, even if it is on another loan.
The attacking midfielder nailed down a place at West Ham and should not risk it all by going back to Man Utd.
He could be keen on returning next January if he struggles to play regularly at Old Trafford, but it could be too little, too late by then.
Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho are firmly ahead of Lingard in the pecking order, and it would take some unprecedented level of consistent brilliance for him to play ahead of the duo.
He did not get to taste Premier League action at all during the first half of last season, and while that could change next season, there are no guarantees Solskjaer would play him ahead of the others.
Lingard knows what to do if he wants to play at the World Cup, and he needs to make the best decision for the sake of his future.
