Jamie Carragher baffled by ‘Horrendous’ West Ham quality, it’s the worst he’s ever seen

West Ham are in serious trouble of relegation this season.

Nuno Espirito Santo picked up a West Ham draw against Everton in his first game after taking over from Graham Potter.

The same can’t be said of his first at the London Stadium after West Ham fell to a 2-0 defeat to Brentford in disappointing fashion on Monday.

West Ham were poor against Brentford and were more than deserving of the result that was served up by Keith Andrews’ side.

Jamie Carragher couldn’t believe what he was seeing and went on ranting about the Hammers after the full-time whistle was sounded.

Jamie Carragher by lack of athleticism at West Ham

Sam Matterface was confused by Brentford’s blue kits, but that sort of excuse is off the table for Nuno and his players.

The Irons were arguably doomed from the start after a bizarre starting 11 was named that set the home side off on the wrong foot.

Lucas Paqueta started up front, with Mateus Fernandes on the left and Andy Irving alongside Tomas Soucek in midfield.

This contributed to a dismal performance, which showcased a genuine lack of quality and chances against the Bees in East London.

It was the lack of athleticism that surprised Carragher live via Sky Sports Premier League on 20 October as he made a comparison to football in the 70s and 80s.

He said: “Physicality, pace and energy will always be near the top of what you need to perform in this league.

What I’ve seen from West Ham over the past 12 months, I can’t think of a less athletic team I’ve seen for a very long time in the Premier League. They’re one of the slowest teams I’ve seen in Premier League football.

Look at that first goal. It feels like a flashback to 40 or 50 years ago, like everyone had all the time in the world and there was space. The first goal was absolutely horrendous from a West Ham point of view.

Nuno Espirito Santo got it wrong vs Brentford

Unfortunately, the Hammers do have players who could offer the pace and energy that Carragher is looking for, but they were left out against Brentford.

The fact that Nuno opted to utilise Irving and Soucek before bringing on Guido Rodriguez is totally baffling.

Freddie Potts and Soungoutou Magassa remained on the bench for the entire 90 and could have injected some life into the E20 club.

These sorts of omissions won’t go down well with the Irons faithful as they’re the exact sort of names that supporters want to see on the teamsheet.
