Jamaica media react to what Michail Antonio did away from West Ham United

Michail Antonio scored a decisive goal as the West Ham ace starred in Jamaica’s 2-1 win over Honduras on Tuesday (10 September).

Despite a dominant performance from Honduras, the Reggae Boyz were able to claim all three points in an important CONCACAF Nations League fixture, seeing them rise to the top of Group A2.

Honduras equalised just a minute after an own goal from Denil Maldonado put Jamaica ahead, with Antonio saving the day with a 76th-minute spot-kick.

Reacting to the star’s vital moment, the Jamaica Observer wrote [10 September]: “Mexican referee Victor Caceres Hernandez awarded a spot kick after Antonio was brought down in the Honduran penalty area by goalkeeper Luis Lopez and the striker finished off what he started with a well-placed spot kick into the right corner.”

Michail Antonio returns to West Ham United in form

While the 34-year-old has struggled to hit the back of the net in the Premier League so far this season, Julen Lopetegui cannot afford to do without him.

Antonio notched six goals and two assists last term, and with Niclas Fullkrug and Danny Ings waiting in the wings, the Hammers have a lot of attacking choices when all players are fit.

Of course, that is not currently the case as Fullkrug has returned from international duty with a new injury, which could see him sidelined for a “prolonged period” [GiveMeSport].

Ings could be given the nod against Fulham on Saturday 14 September, though most fans will be hoping that Antonio makes it back from international duty to the London Stadium in time.

Lopetegui could opt to use Jarrod Bowen or Mohammed Kudus in a more central role, and that could be a real possibility, given that Antonio has failed to score so far this season.

The goal against Honduras might just be the boost the striker needs to face Fulham this weekend.
