‘I’ve seen it happen’ – BT Sport pundits question the integrity of West Ham squad after 1-0 defeat
Joe Cole has launched an attack on West Ham United and their squad after the 1-0 defeat to West Brom in the FA Cup.
When asked what is going wrong at the London Stadium, the former Irons and Chelsea winger admitted that too many signings come to the capital and treat it like a holiday.
Along with Cole, Steve McManaman questioned recruitment at West Ham, claiming they don’t do enough research and have just ended up with a long list of players making it hard to select their best team.
Cole questioned the integrity of some of the West Ham players on BT Sport’s FA Cup Tonight – pointing out they haven’t been good enough.
“Certain types of players go to London, and they can have a six-month holiday in London,” he said.
“They go out, they don’t commit to the club, I’m going on a bit of a rant here because I’ve seen it happen over my time here. They down tools and they’re enjoying their time in London. They know they’re getting paid their wages no matter what.
“Talk about characters, West Ham need to get the right characters in from now going forward.”
When asked if the current squad of players include some that are viewing their time in London as a holiday, David Meyler jumped in and confirmed it.
“It is happening.”
The money has been spent, so it is hard to disagree that some of the players just haven’t performed. Maybe that is down to the recruitment process and the scouting, but sometimes the players have to step up – that isn’t happening.
David Moyes has inherited a squad low on confidence and not performing to their abilities. The Hammers are in the bottom half of the Premier League for the average amount of possession and shots on goal per game [WhoScored] despite breaking their transfer record on attackers twice recently for Felipe Anderson and Sebastien Haller.
The blame has to go somewhere and if not the scouting team, it has to be the players. Either way, West Ham are in a bad place right now.
