Ian Wright wowed by Alphonse Areola after unbelievable West Ham United moment

Ian Wright has been the latest to praise West Ham United goalkeeper Alphonse Areola for his impressive performances this season.

The Irons’ stopper has been in inspired form during the early stages of the season, making some crucial stops including saving Enzo Fernandez’s penalty in the win over Chelsea. But it was his performance in the defeat to Manchester City that earned the Frenchman the most praise, as he made ten saves in the game.

Aerola has received plenty of praise from a variety of journalists, players and pundits, including David Seaman [18 September] but Wright has become the latest to gush over the Frenchman.

Speaking on Wrighty’s House on Tuesday (19 September), he said: “Before I mention another one. I think we should mention Areola. He has made some unbelievable saves. He’s gone under the radar.

“I’m not seeing enough on the highlight reels. When you see this guy he’s making great saves and doing good stuff.”

Under the radar

It feels as though Areola’s performances are flying less and less “under the radar” with each passing week, as more and more pundits begin to praise the 30-year-old’s displays as he continues to impress week in and week out for the Hammers.

David Moyes had a tough decision to make at the start of the campaign when deciding who out of Areola and Lukasz Fabianski would be his number one in domestic competitions this season and with each passing game, it’s becoming more apparent that he made the right call.

His ten saves against Manchester City, a record in the Premier League this season, kept West Ham in the contest for a majority of the game and in matches where he is facing a less potent attack, that sort of performance could be the difference between the Irons winning matches of dropping points.

With this many pundits now coming out to praise the Frenchman, other teams are going to be more and more aware of Areola’s strong start to the season.

Luckily, the Irons’ success both in Europe and domestically this season will likely mean he is more than happy to be the main man at the London Stadium, rather than looking for a move up the footballing pyramid.

In other West Ham news, Michail Antonio has claimed that the Irons will finish above Liverpool this season
