Harry Maguire transfer from Manchester United to West Ham United collapses – Jacob Steinberg

Harry Maguire’s move to West Ham has “collapsed” after the club “grew tired of waiting” for the former Manchester United captain, according to Jacob Steinberg.

The Guardian journalist reported for the newspaper’s website Tuesday (15 August) that the Hammers have grown “frustrated by the delay” and are now looking at alternative targets for the defence.

According to Steinberg there is a “chance” the deal could yet be revived but it is currently not going ahead, with the former Old Trafford captain thought to want a £7million pay-off to leave to cover the wage increase he got for qualifying for the Champions League this season.

The 30-year-old England international was in line to make a move the London Stadium after the Irons had a bid of £30million accepted in Manchester.

Frustration

This news will be a definite blow to David Moyes’ ambitions this summer as the manager had targeted Maguire as his top option for the defence.

But with delays to transfer business proving a major issue throughout the window this year it looks like the club have had enough in this instance.

Moyes wanted Maguire as his new centre-back thanks to extensive injury issues in recent years to the likes of Kurt Zouma, Nayef Aguerd and Angelo Ogbonna.

West Ham

With incoming business not ultimately getting started until the season was already here West Ham can’t afford to wait around if adequate progress isn’t being made since the deadline is little over two weeks away.

Maguire has fallen down the pecking order under Erik ten Hag with Raphael Varane, Lisando Martinez and Victor Lindelof ahead of him, and lost the captaincy this summer.

In some ways a move to the London Stadium looks like the ideal next step for him at this stage of his career, but it appears the wages issue may have put paid to that, at least for now.

In other West Ham news, the Irons have accepted that yet another major departure from the club is now on the cards.
