Harrison Ashby surely done after West Ham United news emerges

Harrison Ashby is a player who has looked destined to leave West Ham United for a number of months – and after a recent development, it appears his exit could be all but done.

TEAMtalk report (2 December) that Leeds United defender Cody Drameh is on the Hammers’ radar and the Irons’ interest in the 20-year-old surely shows they’re resigned to losing Ashby.

The 21-year-old has seen contract talks come to a standstill with 90min suggesting (30 November) that the right-back is closing in on a January move to Newcastle. News of the Hammers’ interest in Drameh should be the final nail in the coffin for any hopes of Ashby remaining at the club.

It’s clear Ashby and his agent have been eager to earn him a bigger contract and considering he’s yet to make a real impact on the first team, the board are right to stand firm when it comes to his demands. Ashby is only two years younger than Declan Rice and needs to show he’s deserving of the deal he’s after.

Drameh would be an astute pickup for West Ham, with the Leeds full-back attracting a lot of attention in recent weeks. He’s experienced a loan in the Championship and is at an age where he can develop. In many ways, he’s a like-for-like replacement for Ashby, who looks destined for the North East.

The big losers from this scenario look like Leeds United, who are set for one of their brighter young players to depart without a replacement. The Whites were also interested in Ashby in the summer transfer window but failed to get a last-gasp move over the line.
