Guillem Balague reacts to Wolves criticism as Julen Lopetegui news drops at West Ham United

Guillem Balague has reacted to Wolves fans’ criticism after Julen Lopetegui agreed to replace David Moyes as West Ham manager.

The Hammers confirmed they would be parting ways with David Moyes after it was reported, as per Fabrizio Romano, that Lopetegui had agreed terms with the club to become the new manager.

The Spaniard has previous experience in the Premier League with Wolves, but left the Midlands club on a sour note, however, departing just three days before the 2023/24 season kicked off.

Taking to X on Monday (6 May), Balague wrote: “Two things about Lopetegui…

“He did not leave Wolves because he thought the squad was poor. It was because the goalpost was moved three times. If at work your boss lies to you three times, do you stay? A man of principle like him has to go.

“Secondly, he was not born as manager when he arrived in England where he had extraordinary success at Wolves (from bottom to 13th, 7 points from relegation). He actually was brilliant at Sevilla, Spain and Porto, and was chosen as a Real Madrid manager, no less.

“He is a very top exciting manager. Not sure why Wolves fans are upset with him and not with the board.”

Julen Lopetegui chosen to replace David Moyes at West Ham United

The appointment of Lopetegui has been greeted with very mixed reactions. While some are extremely impressed with his managerial record, others were keen for the club to stay away.

Considering the extensive experience on his CV, managing Wolves, Real Madrid, Sevilla and the Spain national team, it is clear to see why a few fans are excited about his arrival.

However, the criticism from Wolves fans is also understandable. He left them high and dry just before the season started, though it was unclear at the time exactly why this happened.

As Balague alludes to, the Wolves board could be the party to blame for the unusual situation and also suggests that West Ham must do everything to back their new manager in the transfer market.

It appears that the new manager will not be in charge of recruitment after agreeing to a head-coach role, as per Sky Sports News, though this will ensure there is no power struggle when it comes to transfers.

In other West Ham news, a £10m release clause claim has emerged as the Hammers have been given a chance to hire an ‘Elite’ manager.
