Graham Potter’s next job lined up, negotiations to begin soon in speedy return to management

Graham Potter is expected to jump straight back into management, just weeks after he was sacked by West Ham.

West Ham sacked Potter after a terrible start to the Premier League season, which had seen the Hammers win just one of their opening five games.

The Englishman had only arrived in January to replace Julen Lopetegui, but would last just 10 months at the London Stadium.

West Ham hired Nuno Espirito Santo to replace Potter, after the Portuguese boss had been dismissed from his role at Nottingham Forest.

The former Tottenham boss will take charge for the third time when West Ham play Brentford on Monday, with the aim of securing the first victory of his tenure.

Graham Potter in the running for international job

Rangers are among the clubs urged to approach Potter, with the Glasgow club looking for a new manager to replace the departed Russell Martin.

But the 50-year-old now looks set to try his hand in international management, instead.

Anel Avdic reported on Thursday that Potter is the Swedish Football Association’s main target in their search for a new national team coach.

Sweden sacked Jon Dahl Tomasson this week, after the manager had jeopardised chances of World Cup qualification with three consecutive losses to Kosovo, Switzerland, and Kosovo again.

Initial contacts have taken place, and negotiations are expected to begin imminently with Potter, but it remains to be seen whether an agreement is found.

Why would Potter choose Sweden job?

Potter has spent much of his managerial career in Sweden, explaining his affinity for the Scandinavian country.

Fourth-tier Swedish club Ostersunds gave the Englishman his first big job in management in 2011, and earned instant results.

The club were promoted in successive seasons, and earned promotion to Allsvenskan, the top flight, in 2015 for the first time in their history.

After winning the Svenska Cupen in 2017, Potter’s Ostersunds were granted access to the Europa League qualifiers, and later beat Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on what was a historic night.

His exploits in Sweden would convince Swansea City to appoint the Englishman in 2018, and later Brighton the following year.

Speaking this week, Potter said on the Sweden job: “I have a special affection for Sweden. I love the country and I love Swedish football. I owe a lot to Swedish football. So, yes, it would be a fantastic opportunity for me.”
