Graham Potter tipped to replace Julen Lopetegui at West Ham United
Jamie Carragher believes West Ham United appointing Julen Lopetegui was a mistake, with Graham Potter the ideal replacement.
The Liverpool legend feels things couldn’t have gone worse for the Hammers, with the Spanish manager struggling at the London Stadium after replacing David Moyes.
With the 58-year-old’s future under question, Potter has been linked with the Irons [talkSPORT, 10 December], and Carragher thinks the former Brighton head coach ticks boxes.
Speaking on Sky Sports [19 December], the ex-defender said: “It feels like a good fit [Potter to West Ham] in terms of where people were saying they wanted to take their game. Because Lopetegui isn’t that manager.
“It felt to me like they want their De Zerbi and Lopetegui isn’t that. I’m not sure it could’ve gone much worse.”
Graham Potter should replace Julen Lopetegui at West Ham United
Lopetegui was supposed to make progress on the work Moyes did at the London Stadium, but the Spaniard has failed to bring the best out of his squad.
Under the 58-year-old, the Hammers have regressed despite Tim Steidten making some quality additions to the team in the summer.
The East London club have won just five games in the Premier League in the current campaign and they’re nowhere near competing for a European spot in the table.
Lopetegui has managed to survive so far, but West Ham should expedite his sacking and possibly look to appoint Potter soon.

Although the English manager’s stint at Chelsea was not ideal, his qualities were evident at Brighton.
The London Stadium faithful want a more progressive manager, and Potter seems like the right choice.
Lopetegui’s sacking seems inevitable, and sticking with him makes no sense whatsoever.
In other West Ham news, Paul Merson has made a huge admission regarding Lopetegui ahead of the Brighton clash.
