Gary O’Neil sack: Wolves make final decision after loss v West Ham

Gary O’Neil has retained the backing of the Wolves board despite falling to defeat against West Ham on Monday, according to John Percy.

The Telegraph journalist reported on 10 December that the 41-year-old will be given the chance to turn the Old Gold around despite a run of poor form.

The board at Molineux is now focused on supporting the former Bournemouth boss with new signings in January regardless of the result at the London Stadium.

The hierarchy at the West Midlands club are keen to avoid a knee-jerk decision after the 2-1 defeat against Julen Lopetegui’s side on 9 December, but O’Neil’s future will come under scrutiny again if results don’t start to pick up.

Gary O’Neil safe at Wolves after West Ham defeat

The ex-Hammers midfielder certainly will have been facing the pressure after his side went 1-0 and then 2-1 down in East London on Monday.

It was typical of his side’s recent performances that despite getting level through Matt Doherty on 69 minutes, they couldn’t take any points home from the clash.

Many fans would have assumed that this was the final straw for the head coach with the Midlanders but that no longer appears to be the case.

With the January window coming up in less than a month, there is an opportunity to improve his side much like Lopetegui will be hopeful for at the London Stadium.

The Spaniard is under pressure himself but may not have been handed the same courtesy by the Hammers board if his side had lost against Wolves.

Many supporters are fed up with the negative football regardless of a positive and much-needed result at the London Stadium.
