Gary Cotterill shares embarrassing Julen Lopetegui sack twist at West Ham

Gary Cotterill says an “embarrassing result” for West Ham United in either of their next two games could see him sacked.

The Guardian reported on Wednesday (20 November) that Lopetegui has the games with Newcastle United and Arsenal to save his job.

Defeats in those matches would likely spell the end for the Spaniard, it is claimed, after finding himself under immense pressure of late.

Cotterill referenced that report live on Sky Sports News [22 November, 3:37pm] and added a heavy defeat in either could also bring down the curtain on his short tenure.

“There’s one report suggesting Newcastle away and then Arsenal home next week are two crucial games for Lopetegui’s future at West Ham; two games the report suggests that could save his West Ham career,” he said.

Cotterill went on to add: “Well two more bad performances, two bad results, embarrassing results in either of those, and it could be difficult for Lopetegui and the owners may decide to act.”

Julen Lopetegui to be sacked by West Ham United?

The truth is that Monday’s (25 November) clash at St James’ Park could well be Lopetegui’s last in charge of West Ham.

A defeat of a few goals in that one, say, which is not beyond the realms of possibility, could well force David Sullivan’s hand.

Even if the Irons are to win that, a heavy loss to Arsenal the following weekend would again leave those high up at the club in the same situation.

If West Ham can somehow win both games, that would without a doubt help to lift the doom and gloom and would buy Lopetegui a bit more time.

Nobody ever wants to see a manager sacked, but the bottom line is that it has simply not worked for Lopetegui thus far.

The former Real Madrid and Spain boss just simply needs to hope his players turn up at Newcastle early next week and keep him in a job.
