Gabriel Agbonlahor ‘shocked’ by West Ham decision on Lopetegui
Gabriel Agbonlahor questioned why West Ham made the decision to hire Julen Lopetegui this summer saying he was “quite shocked” by the appointment.
Speaking live on talkSPORT [5 December, 08:44], Agbonlahor expressed his surprise at the Hammers’ summer decision to appoint the Spaniard, who had been out of work for almost a year since leaving Wolves.
The former Premier League striker, alongside Ally McCoist, was listening to a Hammers fan blasting David Sullivan for prioritising a head coach not in post at another club, implying avoiding paying a compensation sum.
“They would’ve done their research on managers. Why did they bring [Lopetegui] in?”, Agbonlahor asked.
“I was quite shocked that he got the job.”
West Ham in crunch talks over Lopetegui future
West Ham United have now appeared to reach breaking point, with emergency talks taking place among the board to decide on Lopetegui.
The Spaniard is, as it stands, set to host his former club Wolves on Monday [9 December] in what will be an intriguing game, down in part to the fact both fanbases are at the end of their tether with their teams’ respective bosses.
Despite dominating large parts of the visit to Leicester City, a defensive collapse yet again proved the Hammers’ undoing, as Lopetegui came into scathing criticism for persisting with a high defensive line against Jamie Vardy.

For all Wolves’ defensive issues – even worse than West Ham’s except they didn’t spend over £120million – they remain in possession of players who can cause damage at the other end, including Matheus Cunha and Jorgen Strand Larsen.
The club prided itself ever since going separate ways with Moyes on this new chapter, which has completely and utterly stagnated. Lopetegui is currently the face of that, and Hammers fans have had enough.
