Fulham open talks with Ollie O’Neill, West Ham United want to sign him – David Ornstein

West Ham United are interested in signing Fulham youth wonder Ollie O’Neill this summer, according to David Ornstein.

The Athletic journalist has reported that the newly-promoted Londoners want to keep the winger around.

It is suggested that the Irons and Spurs are both in the market for the 19-year-old, who has a big decision to make on his future, with no new deal yet to be agreed.

Writing in his latest piece for The Athletic on Monday [09 May], Ornstein shared the news from both camps.

“Fulham are in discussions with several players, and among them is Ollie O’Neill, a promising winger who is attracting Premier League interest, including from West Ham United and Tottenham,” he wrote.

“The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international is in the final year of his contract at Craven Cottage but while Fulham want to keep him, the 19-year-old is yet to agree a new deal.

“Multiple clubs have also asked about taking O’Neill on loan next season.”

Future.

The Irons have one of the strongest academies in the country, but there is certainly no harm in continually making it stronger.

O’Neill would add real competition to the squad, and there has been a real pathway created by David Moyes at the London Stadium.

Compare that to Spurs, who rarely open the door to their younger players, who often end up being loaned out before being sold.

West Ham have given minutes to academy players in the Europe League this season, and that is a sign that they are trusted.

That is what young players want and deserve, and it is something that could work in our favour in this pursuit.

Of course, it looks as though Fulham will try to keep the 19-year-old around, but should he turn that down, the Hammers may be ready to pounce.

This is one to keep an eye on.
