French club Dijon reacts as West Ham United star Nayef Aguerd plays in Morocco win v Spain

West Ham United defender Nayef Aguerd has become a national hero after he helped Morocco beat Spain on penalties in the World Cup.

The Irons’ summer signing played 84 minutes at the Education City Stadium but hobbled off the field, clutching his groin/hip as he did to cause concern.

Whether he can play in the quarter-final or not is yet to be seen but the Hammers weren’t the only club handing out high praise for the Moroccan star.

French club Dijon shared an image of the 26-year-old during his time with them on Twitter moments after Achraf Hakimi had paneka’d the final penalty.

He left Dijon to sign for Stade Rennes in 2020 for a minimal fee with West ham signing him from there for roughly £30million in the summer but he has spent much of the season injured up until now.

Worrying

David Moyes will have joined West Ham supporters everywhere in having that sinking feeling that Aguerd could be set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines when he returns to the London Stadium.

The way he looked to the bench and simply shook his head moments before coming off may indicate that this injury is not one that just rules him out of this game or even the tournament.

West Ham

The club will only know once he gets back to London the extent of his injury and how long he may be out but everybody will be fearing the worst after spending the start of the season without their headline signing.

Thilo Kehrer will at least have longer to recover than expected after Germany were dumped out of the groups by Spain and Japan but he has been a mainstay at right-back this season so another player has to step in.

It would surely be sensible to play Kurt Zouma and Craig Dawson as they know each other’s game but only time will tell.
