Flynn Downes’ West Ham exit has stalled as the player’s medical at Southampton has been delayed, according to Sky Sports.

The publication reported on its website on Tuesday (15 August) that the midfielder is yet to have the medical to due illness.

Sky Sports added that Downes, who is set to move to Southampton on loan, will take the medical once he has recovered.

West Ham career over?

Despite featuring heavily under David Moyes last season, Downes’ West Ham career may be over upon his loan move to Southampton.

The Hammers have brought in James Ward-Prowse and Edson Alvarez in midfield following the sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal.

Downes was perhaps excited at the thought of being handed more minutes given the exit of star midfielder Rice, but Moyes was always going to bring in at least one star name to replace his former captain.

The 24-year-old only joined the East London club from Swansea City last summer, signing a five-year contract at the London Stadium.

Hope does, however, remain regarding his Hammers long-term future if he can hit the ground running and be a star player for the Saints this season.

Having largely featured off the bench or in cup competitions in claret and blue, regular playing time will be easy to come by at Southampton, particularly following the exit of Ward-Prowse.

In other West Ham news, one player is set to remain at Rush Green until a decision has been made regarding his future.
