West Ham United plans for Flynn Downes shared as Southampton loan spell draws to end
Flynn Downes will be given a chance to impress at West Ham after a successful loan at Southampton, according to The Standard.
The newspaper reported via its website [8 May] that both Downes and Freddie Potts will be handed an opportunity during pre-season, with Julen Lopetegui set to take over as Hammers manager.
It is understood that the 25-year-old loanee could be the subject of permanent transfer if the Saints are able to secure promotion through the Championship play-offs this season.
Downes played a vital role as Southampton beat Leeds United 2-1 at Elland Road on Saturday 4 May, with Andy Hinchcliffe dubbing him “absolutely outstanding” as he was replaced by Joe Rothwell.
Will Flynn Downes remain at West Ham United next season?
The Hammers loanee started 31 of Southampton’s 46 regular-season Championship matches. He was thrown straight into Russell Martin’s lineup and quickly impressed, becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet.
Downes has certainly proven himself after making 35 appearances under David Moyes since signing from Swansea City in the summer of 2022, only managing seven starts in the Premier League.
However, the midfielder could entertain the idea of a permanent move away from London Stadium, especially if he is given a starting spot by a Premier League team next season.

It seemed like a bit of a kick in the face after Kalvin Phillips was brought to the club during the January transfer window, while Downes sought more game time ahead of the campaign.
While things may be different for the player under Lopetegui’s leadership, the Saints have given him countless opportunities, which could see him choose a move away from West Ham this summer.
