‘First-class’ – Garth Crooks includes West Ham duo in Premier League TOTW

Garth Crooks has included West Ham United duo Angelo Ogbonna and Tomas Soucek in his Premier League Team of the Week.

The Irons picked up an impressive three points in the 1-0 win over Everton, with both playing a huge hand in the clean-sheet and the winner.

David Moyes has stuck with a similar core throughout this season at the London Stadium, and these two are vital components of that.

Crooks was awestruck with Ogbonna and claimed he consistently showed “first-class” defending to keep the impressive Dominic Calvert-Lewin quiet.

“This was another case of first-class defending by West Ham’s Ogbonna,” he wrote.

“He never gave Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin a kick – that said, the service the England international got from his Toffees’ team-mates was practically non-existent.

The BBC pundit also heaped praise on Soucek, and his ability to get on the scoresheet despite being a defensive midfielder.

“Soucek’s taste for goals was beautifully illustrated by the way he anticipated Cresswell’s strike going wide of the goal. Now that’s a natural-born finisher.”

It is no surprise to see these two, once again.

The Hammers duo won a combined total of eight aerial duels at Goodison Park according to WhoScored, and only Yerry Mina bettered that.

Soucek scored the all-important goal, but it was the Italian who shined brightest in Merseyside – also making a vital seven clearances against Calvert-Lewin, who thrives on deliveries into the box.

Crooks is spot on to involve these two in his Team of the Week, and something tells us it won’t be the last time they feature in this before the end of the Premier League season.
