Finance Expert: West Ham United still have market-leading deal as London Stadium rent increases

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive West Ham United columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at the London Stadium...

Dan Plumley has insisted that West Ham United still have a market-leading deal with the landlords to play at the London Stadium each season despite changes.

It has been shared by 6Foot2 that the Hammers now pay £3.5million each year compared to the £2.5million it was back in 2016 after first making that move.

There are performance-related bonuses too, something described as a “savvy” piece of work by the finance expert compared to the £180million revenue they bring in.

“Absolutely,” he exclusively told West Ham Zone when asked if it was a market-leading deal.

“Even in relation to all of those figures with the add-ons, look at that in the context of a club that generates revenue of £180million, it’s still a good deal. It’s interesting to see those add-ons in there and again, a savvy little bit of work there to put some performance-related stuff in.

“In the grand scheme of things, it’s still a great deal for West Ham.”

West Ham United will be rubbing their hands together at the brilliance of this deal each year.

Say whatever you like about David Gold and Sullivan, but they have managed to secure an absolute blinder by only paying this figure every single season.

When you compare it to the minimum of £180million that comes in through revenue in each season (£228million last season), this payment is pennies compared and may not even be recognised.

Long may that continue.
