Ferdinand fears for the survival chances of West Ham

West Ham United are in serious trouble this season, there’s no doubt about that. The relegation zone welcomed them recently, and they’ve got a job getting out of it.

David Moyes’ return as manager, which threatened to have a galvanising impact after his first game back against Bournemouth, has failed to rejuvenate the east London outfit.

There are serious questions over whether the Irons can haul their way out of the bottom three.

Former West Ham star Rio Ferdinand certainly has his doubts over whether his old team can survive this campaign.

West Ham

“They’re in a relegation battle at the moment,” he told talkSPORT. “Their position tells you all you need to know.

“They’ve got to find some fight from somewhere. At the end of the day no-one has a divine right to be in the Premier League. They’ve spent big money on players for West Ham’s level. At the moment it’s not bearing fruit

“They’ve got good people in the building, especially personnel like Mark Noble. He knows his way around West Ham, knows his way around the league and knows what it means to the local people there.

“David Moyes has got a huge job on his hands. He’s got to make sure he keeps West Ham in the league. He’s got to galvanise that squad now. It’s difficult as it can get toxic there very quickly. The fans want to see a certain style of football and they want to see results – just like at every other football club.”

Will West Ham really go down?

It’s very possible, there’s no doubt about that. The team look to be in absolute free-fall at the moment, as shown by them throwing away three points against Brighton & Hove Albion last time out.

Having Noble is all well and good, of course, but he’s not got the ability to single-handedly pull them out of trouble, as Marko Arnautovic did a couple of seasons ago.

Yes, the club have spent big money, as Ferdinand says, but he neglects the fact that the squad was gutted last summer to allow them to spend big money. That’s a fact that most pundits seem to be missing.
