Fabrizio Romano: West Ham have ‘good chances’ to be successful in summer Darwin Nunez chase
West Ham will have “good chances” when they revisit the failed transfer of Darwin Nunez in the summer according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Hammers had a club-record bid rejected in the January, as the move proved impossible and the club came away empty handed when the transfer window closed.
But the Uruguayan, who scored Benfica’s winner to knock Ajax out of the Champions League last night (Tuesday 15 March), appears to be more accessible once the season is over and the Irons will be back in for him then.
Writing on his personal Twitter account, Romano said: “Darwin Núñez will be another big name to watch in the summer. West Ham made an official bid for him on Deadline Day in Jan: €48m turned down by Benfica.
“Hammers alongside other clubs will be back in the summer for Núñez, this time with good chances.”
Hopes reignited
The failed chase for the striker contributed to a frustrating transfer window for Hammers fans.
TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook called the move a “nightmare deal to get done” at the time, and coupled with the fruitless approaches for Leeds duo Raphinha and Kalvin Phillips, contributed to a feeling that the club were approaching the wrong targets.
David Moyes has been in need of a striker since Sebastien Haller left, incidentally on the losing side against Nunez in Amsterdam last night.

Michail Antonio has lead the line admirably for the most part, but without suitable back-up he has gone off the boil.
The Evening Standard reported this week that Arsenal are also interested in a summer move for the Benfica star, so it has to be hoped that some good comes of the effort spent during the window in establishing contact.
It has been repeatedly made clear that there is money to spend at the London Stadium, and it will need to be at some point because the current squad is having everything it has wrung out of it to compete this season.
In other West Ham news, another big splash should be made in the transfer market if the Irons want to prove their ambition.
