Fabrizio Romano shares new Steven Bergwijn to West Ham United transfer update with ‘one to watch’ verdict
Fabrizio Romano has admitted that West Ham United will need to sell Said Benrahama and “many others” to be able to complete the signing of Steven Bergwijn this January.
The Hammers are interested in signing the Dutchman, formerly of Tottenham, this month as David Moyes looks to add to his forward line for the second half of the season, especially after Jarrod Bowen and Lucas Paqueta picked up injuries.
While Bergwjin appears to offer a solution to the Irons’ problems, West Ham need to boost their budget before adding to their squad this month and they will need to sell some out of favour players before spending in January.

As quoted by Give Me Sport (10 January) he said: “He is one of the main names they have on their list. They really like him. But it’s really important to boost the budget.
“They need to sell some players like Said Benrahma and many others to make this deal happen. It’s not an easy one, but the option is there.
“The player is, for sure, on the list. I think this could be one to watch in January.”
One to watch
West Ham clearly need to get their own house in order this month before they look to poach players from other clubs and the first step in doing that is beginning to move on players who clearly don’t have a future at the London Stadium.
Benrahma has been little more than a bit part player under Moyes so far this season and even when he has featured, the Algerian has been unable to have a consistent impact on games to show that he is worth keeping beyond the end of January.

The Hammers need to move him on sooner rather than later before they miss the boat on signing Bergwijn this month. The Ajax winger is a much better option for the Hammers, but if they take too long, they risk missing out on his services completely.
This feels like a transfer that could rumble on right until the end of the window as the Hammers try to find a solution to get the deal over the line. As Romano suggests, it’s certainly one to watch this month.
