Fabrizio Romano shares buy-option update as West Ham United agree Kalvin Phillips loan, ‘here we go’

West Ham United have agreed a loan deal with a buy-option clause with Manchester City and Kalvin Phillips to sign the England international this month, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Italian journalist reported via his X account on Tuesday (23 January) that the deal between the two parties will include an option-to-buy clause that can be activated following the end of the Premier League season in June.

Phillips will jet to East London for his medical on Wednesday (24 January) to complete the deal as the Hammers near their first addition of the January transfer window at the London Stadium, after Romano confirmed the deal with a “here we go”.

Writing on X, Romano said: “Kalvin Phillips to West Ham, here we go! Loan deal agreed with Man City and also on player side. One more from Tim Steidten. Understand it will also include an option to buy clause in June for West Ham. Medical tests booked on Wednesday.”

Agreement reached

It has been coming for the last few days, but it finally seems as though West Ham have got a deal over the line to bring Phillips to the London Stadium and boost David Moyes’ midfield for the second half of the season.

The England international has been nowhere near his best during his time at the Etihad Stadium, but he showed during his time at Leeds United that he is more than capable of being a force in the Premier League.

If he can rediscover that level of form during his time with the Hammers, he could well revolutionise Moyes’ midfield and provide the Scotsman with an extra dimension that will help balance the workload of Edson Alvarez and James Ward-Prowse.

Hopefully, the remaining parts of the deal will be completed without a hitch and Phillips will be a Hammers sooner rather than later as long as he gets through his medical tests without anything unexpected cropping up.
