ExWHUEmployee: Summerville undergoes surgery as West Ham United return date set

Crysencio Summerville has not appeared for West Ham United since Graham Potter’s first game in charge of the London Stadium side, thanks to a hamstring injury.

Summerville notched an assist when the Hammers lost 2-1 at Aston Villa in the FA Cup on 10 January, but has been sidelined ever since.

The Dutchman impressed in the Championship with former club Leeds United last term, scoring 20 goals and creating nine assists in 46 appearances.

However, Summerville has struggled to prove his worth in West Ham colours, notching just one goal and one assist in 19 outings.

Summerville has had an injury-hit season at West Ham

Meanwhile, as reported by Hammers insider ExWHUEmployee via The West Ham Way (29 April), Summerville had initially refused surgery, which made his eventual operation more complicated than it would have been before.

Consequently, the 23-year-old’s season is over, as the initial verdict is that he will not return from injury until mid-August at the earliest, meaning he is also set to miss the start of the 2025-26 campaign.

Next season will be crucial for Summerville at West Ham

Summerville proved how clinical he can be with Leeds last season and was deserving of his summer move away from the Championship and into the Premier League.

However, his first season in West Ham colours could not have gone significantly worse, as he initially struggled to nail down a regular starting 11 spot under former boss Julen Lopetegui before suffering an injury in his first game under Potter.

Summerville showed Potter a glimpse of the quality he can offer when he created an assist in their FA Cup defeat to Aston Villa in January, but he has been unable to feature ever since.

The former Netherlands Under-21s international must now have a successful season next campaign to prove to West Ham that his services were worth acquiring.

Potter’s men will hope to enjoy a much stronger campaign in the Premier League next term, and Summerville could help the London Stadium outfit do that if he can stay fit.
