ExWHUemployee: West Ham could table new bid for Nunez if Benfica rejects first offer

West Ham could go back in for Benfica attacker Darwin Nunez if their initial bid is knocked back, according to ExWHUemployee.

The reliable Hammers insider claimed on the West Ham Way Patreon page on Monday morning (31 January, 9:17 am) that reports that the 22-year-old Uruguayan has rejected a deal are probably based on the fact that one has not been accepted by the Portuguese outfit.

The Irons are still trying to get the deal done, but the chances of doing that before today’s 11 pm deadline appear very slim.

Not happening?

It is clear that West Ham want Nunez and will pull out all the stops in order to get one done, but they might have left things too little, too late.

Convincing both club and player into agreeing to a deal on transfer deadline day will not be the easiest of tasks, and whether their first bid or potential second bid would be enough to tempt Benfica is unknown.

David Moyes clearly wants a quality striker to help get his side into the top-four after last season’s narrow miss, and Nunez’s numbers speak for themselves so far this term.

With just a few hours left in the window, the Irons do not have a lot of time if they want to get any deal done today, and they will need to make some rational decisions quickly before 11 pm.

That will go a long way in determining whether they will be playing Champions League football next season, and Moyes needs to get things right.

Relying on Michail Antonio and Jarrod Bowen to provide cover could end up proving risky, and West Ham need to splash the cash if they want to get into Europe’s elite competition with the big boys.
