ExWHUemployee claims that West Ham are still trying to sign Alphonse Areola

ExWHUemployee has confirmed on his own personal Twitter account that West Ham are still trying to sign Alphonse Areola from PSG.

This follows on from one Hammers fan asking Ex about the Irons’ pursuit of the former Fulham loan man, and he replied that the deal “is still on”. Areola apparently wants to join West Ham, and the club have agreed personal terms [Football Insider].

However, nothing has happened yet, and Areola is still a PSG player, which clearly annoyed some West Ham fans who might have panicked about the Frenchman, but if Ex has assured them, there is probably nothing to worry about.

Do West Ham need Areola?

The Hammers currently have Lukasz Fabianski and Darren Randolph as first-team goalkeepers; however, Fabianski is getting on and has had injury issues in the last two seasons, while Randolph has not really played that much Premier League football.

Areola has played more games in the Premier League than Randolph and has regularly played in Ligue 1.

He also impressed while he was at Fulham and was described as “brilliant” by The Athletic.

So, you can see why West Ham want him, and though the deal seems to have slowed down, it appears as if the Hammers still want him, and we would be surprised if he didn’t join them.

Signing Areola could work either as a boost for Fabianski to push him on and perhaps get one more strong season from the Pole, or the 28-year-old could come in and replace Fabianski as the Hammers’ goalkeeper.

So, this will be a worthwhile signing no matter the outcome, and we just have to wait and see if the Irons seal the deal now.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers are interested in bringing a Manchester City player to the London Stadium.
