Everton may be hit with similar sanctions as West Ham United in 2007

Everton may be hit with similar sanctions as West Ham were in 2007 for third-party ownership of Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez, according to the Independent.

The British newspaper wrote on its website on Thursday, 26 October, that while a points deduction is on the cards, that’s also an option.

The Hammers had to pay a multi-million fee two decades ago as a fine for their wrongdoings.

Repeat?

West Ham’s ownership issue involving Tevez and Mascherano occurred when the Argentine duo joined in August 2006.

Initially, it seemed like a pretty good signing for the Hammers, but shortly after, third-party ownership arrangement complications emerged.

Tevez and Mascherano were actually owned by a third-party consortium called Media Sports Investment (MSI), which had ties to Kia Joorabchian.

West Ham United

This violated Premier League rules as they gave outside parties an unfair influence over player transfers and contracts.

The club also had not fully disclosed the nature of these contracts to the league and were fined £5.5million but avoided a points deduction, after an investigation from the league.

It remains to be seen how they handle the Everton case, as a points deduction may even lead to them being relegated.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers are now frustrated with a £10m player as a behind-the-scenes revelation has emerged from the London Stadium.
