Erik ten Hag would prefer Scott McTominay to stay at Manchester United amid failed £30million West Ham bid

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag would prefer to keep Scott McTominay at the club amid a new bid from West Ham United, according to The Athletic.

The outlet reported (8 August) that West Ham had a £30million bid for the Scotsman rejected on Monday (7 August) as ten Hag’s side value him at £40million.

However, the manager would ideally keep him at the club amid the Hammers’ interest in Manchester United centre-back Harry Maguire.

With time ticking on West Ham’s transfer window, this news will not sit well with Hammers fans.

While they target Manchester United’s former captain Maguire, the Scotsman is clearly valued by his manager and won’t be sold unless his valuation is matched.

£30million is not enough, but the Irons have not a good recent history of meeting valuations. This summer, they failed to meet Southampton’s asking price for midfielder James Ward-Prowse and, according to the Daily Mail (6 August), could risk losing him to Tottenham.

West Ham must loosen their purse strings a little bit more if they want to land their targets this summer. They have finally completed their first senior signing with Ajax midfielder Edson Alvares jetting to London to undergo a medical on Tuesday (8 August) ahead of his £35million move, according to Fabrizio Romano.

McTominay would be a quality addition to West Ham. He has been a favourite with many Manchester United managers, including Jose Mourinho who wants him at Roma, per Sacha Tavolieri (6 August).

So they will need to act quickly and submit a convincing bid for ten Hag to sanction the move.

If West Ham wants their man, they will likely have to pay the extra £10million soon or risk the move not happening at all.
