Elliott takes cheeky dig at West Ham man
West Ham United midfielder Declan Rice upset a lot of people in 2019 when he switched his international allegiance to England.
The youngster had already played a few times for the Republic of Ireland having been eligible through his grandparents.
However, none of those games were competitive fixtures, meaning that he was free to change to the Three Lions when Gareth Southgate came calling.
So, when the 20-year-old saw the Hammers’ late equaliser against Sheffield United ruled out by VAR due to his accidental handball, the Irish took it as a fine opportunity to hit back at him.
That was certainly the case for former Premier League striker and Republic of Ireland international Stephen Elliott.
He had this to say on his personal Twitter account on Friday in response to Rice’s complaints about VAR.
“He probably will like it next week though as he has been known to change his mind!!!”
West Ham Zone’s View
You just knew somebody was going to make a comment like this, didn’t you? The Irish simply haven’t forgiven or forgotten what Rice did to them.
To be fair, you can’t really blame them. Of course it would be disappointing to lose a hugely promising young player when he’d already played three times for you.
It’s a cheeky dig from Elliott, but probably the type that Rice gets every other day. He will have known what would happen when he made his decision, so there you go.
