Edson Alvarez slammed by Mexican media after what West Ham United star did

West Ham United star Edson Alvarez has been slammed by the media for his Mexico performance against Brazil overnight (9 June).

The versatile midfielder started as a centre-back in a friendly for his country but conceded three in a 3-2 defeat against Brazil.

Alvarez could not stop Andreas Pereira, Gabriel Martinelli and Endrick as Mexico ended their preparations for the Copa America with a loss.

ESPN Deportes has given the West Ham man a 5.5 rating out of 10 (9 June) while slamming him for his performance.

He said: “Enabled as a centre back, he fell back poorly on counterattacks and allowed himself to be constantly beaten.

“Like the play that led to the first goal, in which he lost Andreas Pereira’s reference and allowed him to play comfortably inside the area until he shot on goal. In addition, he again gave away balls at the start that committed the team to counterattacks.”

West Ham star Edson Alvarez struggles with Mexico

The Mexican had an up-and-down first campaign at the London Stadium where David Moyes often called out his discipline.

With that being said he did often perform well at the base of midfield and moving into his second season he will only get better.

It must be said that he hasn’t shown the best of his ability so far while on international duty across friendlies against Uruguay and Brazil.

On Thursday (6 June) the Hammers man struggled in a 4-0 defeat which saw the media describe his performance as “abysmal”.

He was similarly criticised against Brazil although he was playing out of position against top attacking talent which would have been difficult regardless.

West Ham
Nayef Aguerd has made just 39 Premier League appearances since arriving at West Ham in 2022.

Ahead of the Copa America Alvarez will need to better to keep his place especially with Julen Lopetegui coming in at West Ham.

The new Hammers head coach will be assessing his options this summer and the Mexican international will want to be a part of those.
