Edson Alvarez injury update emerges at West Ham United as ‘bad news’ mooted
West Ham United technical director Tim Steidten has confirmed Edson Alvarez will return to England to continue his rehab for an injury sustained on international duty.
The Mexican international was reportedly set to miss five or six weeks of action having sustained a six-centimetre tear in the posterior thigh of his left leg during his side’s Copa America clash with Jamaica [Fox Sports, 26 June].
Although neither Steidten nor manager Julen Lopetegui confirmed the reported timeline, they didn’t admit that the injury blow was “bad news” as they begin to prepare for pre-season in East London.
As quoted by Knees Up Mother Brown (1 July) Steidten said: “I’ve spoken with Edson and the medical team are in contact with him.
“He’s doing some rehab and then coming back to England and continuing it.”
Lopetegui added: “The injury to Edson is bad news for us. It’s good the other guys are playing well for their countries, but hopefully, they come back to us in good shape.”
Will Edson Alvarez miss West Ham United pre-season after Copa America injury?
As Lopetegui suggested, it will be “bad news” for the Hammers if they are without Alvarez for any considerable length of time as they look to begin work ahead of the start of the Premier League season.
While the Mexican international had a mixed first season in East London after he replaced Declan Rice at the base of midfield, there was enough in his displays to encourage supporters that he could be a success in the future.
He added a bit of bite and desire in the middle of the park that was crucial to how David Moyes wanted to play and that will likely be the same when Lopetegui gets his hands on this squad over the next few weeks.

Hopefully, Alvarez can make a quicker recovery than expected and get back in action ready for the start of the new season. It is at least positive that the Irons will have him under their watch while he undergoes his rehab.
That way, they don’t run the risk of him rushing his return to try and return to action for his national side in the coming weeks.
