Dwight McNeil ‘option’ for West Ham – Paul Brown

Burnley winger Dwight McNeil is an “option” for West Ham in this transfer window, according to Daily Star journalist Paul Brown.

The Hammers are in the market to sign players to strengthen their attacking department ahead of the next campaign.

The Irons pushed heavily to sign Jesse Lingard all summer after he became a free-agent, but in the end, he eventually chose to join Nottingham Forest.

Brown, while talking to Give Me Sport, revealed that McNeil remains an option for the Hammers but they are not pursuing it actively.

“I think there are agents putting his name out there with various clubs,” he said.

“I think he’s probably an option for West Ham, but I don’t think they’re pushing particularly hard for him at the moment.”

Decent Option

It is a tricky call for West Ham to make regarding McNeil as it is extremely hard to rate a player highly if he is part of the team that got relegated in the last term and at the same time, his numbers are hard to evaluate considering that he played all of his senior-team football at a club where the focus was on establishing a solid backline.

However, it is important that they don’t completely ignore the 22-year-old from their plans as well as the club does not have a lot of wingers going into the next season after the departure of Andriy Yarmolenko and uncertainty about the future of Saïd Benrahma.

The England U21 international has been a Burnley player ever since joining their U18 side in the summer of 2014 from Manchester United on a free transfer.

Since then, the 22-year-old has represented his current club in 147 matches in all competitions where he has managed to score seven goals and provided 17 assists [Transfermarkt].
