Dharmesh Sheth: West Ham United terms for Kalvin Phillips expensive as ‘X-Factor’ verdict shared live on Sky Sports News

Lianne Sanderson has suggested Kalvin Phillips has an “X-factor” after Dharmesh Sheth detailed the expensive terms West Ham had agreed for the midfielder.

As revealed by Fabrizio Romano via his official X account (23 January), Phillips is set to complete a loan move from Manchester City to West Ham which will include an option-to-buy clause in June.

While speaking live on Sky Sports News (24 January, 7:11 pm), Sheth detailed the expensive nature of these terms.

“It is quite a high option considering he hasn’t played. I know we’re talking about Phillips at his absolute peak, but £35million? They (Manchester City) would be recouping the majority of the money that they paid Leeds United.

Sanderson responded, stating, “I have no doubt that he will be a success at West Ham, I don’t know why, I could be wrong but I still think there is a player in there, it just hasn’t worked out but I do believe he has that little bit of X-factor that I think can work at a really top club.”

Win-win

For West Ham and David Moyes, it is hard to see the downside of this deal, even if Sheth is suggesting that the option to buy is perhaps a bit much.

Ultimately, it is not an obligation, and if Phillips underperforms and the Hammers do feel as if £35million is a bit too much to pay, then they can just refuse the option.

On the other hand, if Phillips performs well and rediscovers the form that made him such a hit at Leeds United, then all of a sudden £35million would start to look like a bargain for an England international who has only recently turned 28.

That is why it is hard to see any drawbacks of this deal for the East London club.

As for Phillips, he will get a chance to play regular football ahead of the European Championships this summer, and it just has the feel of one of those moves which makes sense for everybody involved.
