Dharmesh Sheth: Kalvin Phillips due for West Ham United medical on Thursday morning, deal could be completed within 24 hours
Kalvin Phillips is now due for a medical at West Ham on Thursday morning (25 January), according to Dharmesh Sheth.
The Sky Sports News reporter shared live on air (24 January, 7:11 pm) that the deal for the English international to join the Hammers from Manchester City on loan should be completed within the next 24 hours.
West Ham do have the option to make the move permanent in the summer should the former Leeds United man prove a success at the London Stadium.
Sheth speaking live on Sky Sports shared: “Phillips is expected in London tomorrow morning, where he will have a medical with West Ham United all being well, this deal should be completed before the weekend.
“It could be done in the next 24 to 48 hours. It is a deal that is a loan spell until the end of the season.
“We understand that West Ham United do have an option to make that loan deal a permanent deal in the summer.”
Statement
This deal is a major coup for West Ham United given Phillips’ quality and experience both at club and international level, and a transfer that certainly makes a statement to the rest of the Premier League.
A loan deal for the Englishman makes perfect sense for all parties involved but it remains to be seen whether he will play again for Manchester City which means he will leave permanently before next season begins.
Whether that’s at West Ham remains to be seen and should Phillips go on to enjoy his loan spell at the London Stadium for the remainder of the season though, it won’t be plain sailing in sealing a permanent move.
Phillips’ £165k-a-week wages are astronomical and are figures that the Hammers simply cannot reach given the FFP situation and salary cap at clubs outside the top six.
If the former Leeds United midfielder was to join the club permanently next season, he will seriously need to consider a wage cut but Phillips doesn’t seem like a player who would turn down such an opportunity just because he’d be on smaller wages.
Right now, the Englishman needs to be playing football and the chance to prove himself at the highest level and more crucially prove to England manager Gareth Southgate that he still remains a crucial midfield figure ahead of Euro 2024 in June.

The pull the Hammers have shown to persuade Phillips to join is mightily impressive when there were clubs like Juventus in the frame to sign him. Statement acquisition again from David Moyes and Tim Steidten.
