Dermot Gallagher: West Ham deserved second penalty v Manchester United
Dermot Gallagher has insisted that West Ham United deserved a second penalty against Manchester United.
Tomas Soucek appeared to be fouled by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but the officials decided to give the decision the other way round.
Gallagher shared that VAR couldn’t intervene as the officials had already told them their thinking and give it the other way.
Speaking on Sky Sports via Football Daily this morning, Gallagher shared his verdict on the controversial moment.
“It’s a foul,” he said.
“My first reaction was they must have given offside. When you see it sideways on, it’s offside. I think Wan-Bissaka has slid in to make the tackle and doesn’t realise he’s there.
“He’s caught him – the onfield decision was foul by Soucek. The VAR has nowhere to go then because the referee has made that decision on the field.”
We still can’t get our heads around this one.
How on earth Wan-Bissaka was given the free-kick is beyond us and makes no sense whatsoever, everyone can see that.
Soucek had his back to the defender and didn’t even see he was there, and only landed on top of him after being taken out.
The linesman didn’t flag for offside either so that decision is irrelevant, but this is yet another piece of shocking officiating.
Missing that final penalty may have meant nothing if we had been given this one and put it away to take the lead earlier.
It has gone now, but if officiating continues in this manner, it won’t be long until changes are demanded in the Premier League.
