Dermot Gallagher reacts to controversial incident in West Ham United win v Burnley, ‘I just do not think…’

Dermot Gallagher believes the referee was wrong to award a penalty to Burnley in the second half against West Ham on Saturday (25 November).

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Ref Watch on Monday (27 November), the former Premier League referee said there was “minimal contact” as Mohammed Kudus was adjudged to have fouled Luca Koleosho inside the box.

He added that the officials got the decisions the “wrong way round” after the Clarets winger saw a penalty shout turned down in the first half of the Hammers’ 2-1 victory at Turf Moor.

“I think there is minimal contact,” said Gallagher. “I just do not think that is a penalty. I think they have got them the wrong way round.”

Not good enough

The game against Burnley was just another example of how the officiating in the Premier League hasn’t been anywhere near good enough this season.

West Ham matches have seen a number of controversial incidents this season and, on just about every occasion, it feels as though the officials have come to the wrong decision.

While the Clarets have a right to feel aggrieved for not receiving a penalty in the first half for a potential foul by Vladimir Coufal on Koleosho, it doesn’t make it right that the second-half decision was awarded in his favour.

There are some people who will argue that it just evened things up, but it still means two wrong decisions were made by the referee.

The Hammers will just be pleased to have registered the two late goals that earned them all three points despite putting in a disappointing performance.
